Tiger Town, Leaving FL - Spring in North Carolina & Maryland/DC

We're coming to see you Ellie!
Leaving Lakeland Florida - March 21st
Preparing to leave Florida the first full day of Spring, we wondered if it may be a little too soon to head north!  We were heading to NC and actually delayed a day due to possible snow in the Raleigh area.  Luckily when we arrived, after a stop over in SC, there was no snow, just a couple of cool days.  It warmed up quickly and we enjoyed some nice weather and time with Cheryl, Darren, and our beautiful granddaughter Ellie.

Lakeland - Tiger Town:  Before leaving Florida, our last stop was in Lakeland - Tiger Town.  We stayed at Sanlan RV & Golf Resort-RV Park about seven miles from Joker Marchant Stadium.  A large park with a mix of permanent winter homes as well as RV lots with full hookups.
Tigers vs Yankees - St. Patrick's Day Joker Marchant Stadium

We enjoyed three Detroit Tiger spring training games; the best being against the NY Yankees on St. Patrick's Day.

We liked the ease of getting to the ballpark, parking, and the smaller crowds.  With many improvements made to the Stadium over the last several years, it's a great atmosphere.  Since we were there later in the the spring training season, we saw a lot of the regulars play the first 5-6 innings and then they would start subbing some of the minor league players.

The crowd seem to like it when in the middle of the 1st inning they did a weather report on the big scoreboard, highlighting the Lakeland weather compared to the weather in Detroit.
Great lunch with Susan & Gale

While in Lakeland, we were able to meet up with good friends, Susan and Gale, from Michigan.  They were staying in Port Charlotte, so we met them in Bradenton for lunch.  So good to see them; opportunities to meet up with family and friends is always welcomed!

Kennedy Space Center - Cape Canaveral FL
Rocket Garden - Kennedy Space Ctr
Kennedy Space Center:  Even though it was a two hour drive from Lakeland, we drove to the east coast of Florida to the Kennedy Space Center.  It has been quite a few years since we were there and we were not sure what to expect.  Nice to see they still draw a good amount of visitors and have updated and added exhibits.  There is an admission fee of $50 per person (there is a discount for seniors and kids), $10 parking fee; and bus tours available for an additional fee.

Space Shuttle Atlantis
A highlight was the new Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit.  The way they set up the display within the new building is impressive. Other buildings house various space exhibits and theater presentations; there are bus tours of the launch sites, Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), etc.  It's worth a visit if you are in the area.

Jordan Lake - Poplar Point Campgrounds
Campfire by moonlight
North Carolina - Jordan Lake:  Back in North Carolina for a couple of weeks and one of our favorite spots - Jordan Lake.  This time we are staying in the Poplar Point campground.  Not too many people here when we got here, so we had our pick of spots.  The Park got busier around Easter weekend and the following week.

Cheryl & Ellie visit
Cheryl and Ellie came out to the Park for a visit.  Ellie's first visit to our house on wheels.  We had some relaxing days here; a couple of nice bike rides, campfires, and Jim did a little fishing.  The Spring pine tree pollen was coming on strong while we were there coating everything with heavy yellow/green dust.  A small price to pay for some nice Spring weather.

Cherry Blossoms - Tidal Basin
Maryland/Washington DC:  Our trip to Maryland and the DC area was planned around our daughter, Beth's, birthday and with the hope of seeing the cherry blossoms in bloom.  We made advanced reservations at Cherry Hill Park located about 4 miles from Beth & Kevin in College Park, MD.  A large park that fills up this time of year as the Cherry Blossoms draw the crowds!

The National Parks Service updates "Bloom Watch" on their website estimating the timing for peak viewing.  Due to a mild winter followed by a cold March, they had to revise their estimated date numerous times.  At first we thought we were going to miss it completely, but as it turns out we hit the peak.  With Kevin and Beth's help, we were able to maneuver the crowds and spent a nice afternoon enjoying the walk along the Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial as well as other sites along the Mall. I understand there is another display of cherry trees at Arlington National Cemetery.

Kevin & Beth -Tidal Basin/Jefferson Memorial

There are several different varieties of Cherry Trees; some with a more pink flower and others are mostly white.  A much longer story is involved, but 3,000 cherry trees were a gift from the mayor of Tokyo in 1912.  President Taft's wife (Helen) was instrumental in bringing the idea to plant them around the Tidal Basin to fruition.

Cathedral of St. Matthew
Cathedral of St. Matthew:  We attended Mass at the Cathedral located about seven blocks from the White House.  Construction of this building began in the late 1800's and was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1974.  It was the site of the funeral Mass for John F. Kennedy in 1963.  There is a commemoration of this in the floor in the front center aisle.

Smithsonian Botanical Gardens - Orchids
Conservatory
Smithsonian Botanical Gardens located on the Mall near the Capital was our last stop for the day. The outdoor gardens were not fully in bloom yet, but the Conservatory provided an indoor walking tour of plants from around the world as well as an amazing Orchid display - over 5,000 specimens.  Admission to all the Smithsonian Buildings is free of charge.

RV Note:  We purchased a cell signal booster while we were in NC.  Jordan Lake was a good place to test it since the cell signal was not very good there.  The "WeBoost" model we purchased is made for RV's and we could tell immediately that it will make a difference in places where we have a weak signal.  Very happy with this purchase as it improved call quality as well as hot spot speed for the internet.

Heading back to Michigan soon; sure hope it warms up there!  Revised our plan to visit Arcadia National Park in Maine; will now be going there in June.

Family, Friends & Fun in Florida AND 6 Months of RV Living

RV Living - Six Months and Counting:  It was over six months ago we left Michigan as full time RVers in our home on wheels.  We now have six months of RV travel and operating experience as well as expense data to reflect on.  In a few words, we are loving it!  Later in this post I will share some specific observations at the six month mark.

Miramar Beach/Destin
Florida Panhandle-Destin:  Continuing our time in the Florida panhandle, we might finally be getting used to being on central time (western part of panhandle is CST); but does it really matter since we are retired?

Anyway, Highway 98 is the main road through a string of cities that includes Santa Rosa Beach, Miramar Beach and Destin.  This is the area of the panhandle between Pensacola to the west and Panama City to the east.

It seems to be getting busier by the day as we are told spring break season begins here around March 1st.  January and February are considered off-season, so rates start increasing in March.  January and February can be cool here with average high temperatures in February in the mid 60's.  People we talked to said January 2018 was unusually cold, but February has been a little above average.  A lot of development and growth has taken place since we first visited here about 11 years ago and it shows no signs of letting up.

Despite the growth, this is another area that has done a pretty good job of preserving public access to the beach.  Rightfully named the "Emerald Coast", you can't beat the beach views with various shades of green and blue Gulf water that contrasts against the white sand.  On a nice sunny day the colors are quite vivid.

Topsail Park Beach -Sunbrella
To begin our time in this part of the panhandle we stayed at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park - Gregory E. Moore RV Resort in Santa Rosa Beach 10 miles east of Destin.  I learned the "in park RV resort" was previously a private park but is now under State ownership.  It's a little different from other State Park campgrounds since they offer full hook ups, including cable TV.  It's a reasonable nightly fee compared to private parks, but there is the 14-day stay restriction.  A large park, over 1,600 acres, with over three miles of the dune beach similar to other areas along the panhandle, two fresh water coastal dune lakes, and lots of recreation options.  The beach is about a mile from the campground via a paved path for walking, biking or taking the park's tram than runs continuously throughout the day.  We made good use of our bikes here.

Euchre - Jim, Deb, Marty & Nancy (missing)
Topsail Campsite - Deb, Marty, Jim
Friends and Family:  We got a much needed dose of friends and family in February and early March.  During our stay at Topsail we visited with good friends Marty and Nancy who were staying in the Destin area at the same time.  Our visit included a trip to Pepitos Mexican Restaurant on National Magarita Day (Feb. 22nd), and a game or two of Euchre, of course, and lots of laughs.  (Thanks to Nancy for the pictures!)

Lunch at McGuires Pub - Jim, Deb, Linda, Bernie
Another perk for us in this area is my sister, Linda and husband Bernie live west of Destin in Navarre.  We got to see them several times, including lunch at McGuires Irish Pub.  Also enjoyed a visit with their two daughters (Nicole, Jennie and husband Bill) who were in town.  Don't get to see my two nieces very often, so that was a treat.

The Surf Hut - Miramar Beach/Destin
Jim & Karen - Miramar Beach
To top it all off, we enjoyed a six day visit from Jim's sister Karen and husband Anderson, who are also great traveling buddies.  Lots of fun trips over the years and they will be meeting us at the Grand Canyon in the Fall!

Leaving Topsail Park, we moved to Destin RV Resort across the street from the hotel they stayed in Miramar Beach/Destin.  With beach access right across the road, we took advantage of the warm sunny days.  Destin RV Resort is a private park with only 36 spaces and full hook ups.  Even though the spaces are close together they did a good job with landscaping between the sites.

Mojito - Surf Hut
Destin RV Resort
Sunset afterglow - Boardwalk near Pompano Joe's

"Scenic Highway 98" (or Gulf View Drive) splits off Highway 98 and runs along the Gulf with a range of condominium buildings, lots of vacation rentals, public beach access, restaurants, etc.

Popular restaurants in the area we visited are The Surf Hut, Pompano Joe's, and The Back Porch.  Karen and I decided The Surf Hut makes a very good Mojito.

Miramar Beach/Destin across from Campground

There is a paved path that runs beside Gulf View Drive for miles providing safe walking and bike riding with a nice view of the Gulf in most spots.

Low flying military planes from beach
Henderson State Park in the heart of  Destin is a large park on the beach that provides a great day use facility as well as a campground.   It is common to hear (and maybe see) military airplanes flying over during the day from nearby Eglin Air Force Base. Two other bases in this area are Pensacola Naval Air Station and Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City.

National Museum of Naval Aviation - Pensacola
Blue Angel - F18
The four of us took a trip to the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola.  The two hour drive proved to be a little farther than we first thought due to traffic and location (well west of Pensacola).  Arriving at the wrong gate on the Base didn't help, but we were directed to the correct gate by gate security.  Note: I believe the website has better directions to the correct gate as opposed to using the Apple maps directions like I did (caught me again).
Blue Angels Exhibit - Pensacola

The Museum has a large array of naval aviation history and other exhibits. One of our favorites was the Blue Angels.  Admission is free and you can explore on your own or join a guided tour.  You can walk right up to most of the aircraft (no roped off barriers in most areas) and in some locations there are Navy veterans there is offer additional information.

RV Living - Six Months and Counting:  Evaluating our first six months of full time RVing is overwhelmingly positive.  We have learned a lot, but much more to learn and experience.  Sometimes it still feels like vacation, but then regular household chores, maintenance, and occasional work help the balance. Seems like there is always something to do, so we stay as busy as we want and the days pass quickly (sometimes losing track of what day it is.....).

From a budget review, we determined that our expense estimate was a little low compared to what we actually spent, mostly on camping fees.  Probably not too surprising since we found we like parks that offer a few amenities and staying in south Florida part of the winter was pricey.  However, our average per night is around $35 which is not too bad.  This includes electric, water and either sewer connection or dump station access and sometimes cable TV.  We haven't had to use the propane gas in the warmer climate, other than to cook with.

Destin RV Park
A mix of State and private parks worked for us during this time.  Sometimes you can take advantage of weekly or even monthly rates that brings the price per night down.  (When we were in NC we stayed in a private park with full hookups for $500/month - around $17 per night.)  We'll see if the rest of the year will bring our average per night down a little.  We have been vigilant tracking our expenses on a spreadsheet so we can evaluate and plan accordingly.  Our main variables are camping/park fees, gas, and repairs and maintenance; however camping fees and gas are somewhat within our control by choosing how much to travel and where to stay and can be adjusted as needed.

Destin RV Report
We made a few improvements to the coach during this time including, a new sleep number mattress for our bed, the window defogging repair, and a steering dampener.  We also purchased our e-bikes.  I feel fortunate that Jim is able to do a lot of the regular maintenance and repairs when needed, including oil changes, battery maintenance, repairs to slide out locking mechanism, air conditioner motor fan, kitchen sink, etc. Just like any other home, there are things that come up and his ability to do regular maintenance and some repairs likely saves us hundreds of dollars.  He's also the TV, satellite, and computer tech!

Tax returns to do!
My venture into the remote tax and accounting work has been successful.  I started out cautiously to test internet access, software, and feasibility of getting information to and from clients.  Very happy with the results so far and I see that continuing.

Missing being around family and friends will always be part of the equation, but definitely helped by recent visits.  Lots of phone calls, texts, and occasional FaceTime calls are part of our days now. Spending much of the summer in Michigan will also help with this balance.

For our last Florida stop for the winter, we will be heading south to Lakeland for some Detroit Tiger Spring Training games.  By the end of March we will be back in North Carolina, then on to Maryland/DC, and finally to Michigan by mid-April. A trip to Maine is planned for May.

Florida State Parks, Beaches & Flexible Plans

Who said we couldn't be spontaneous with our plans?  (I think I did.)   After spending most of January in SW Florida, we originally planned to head to the panhandle around the 1st of February; but a few other opportunities came up.

Birthday Lunch at Harry's Seafood Bar & Grill - Lakeland
A few days before leaving SW Florida, Beth and Kevin were in Orlando for Kevin's birthday celebration.  We met them for lunch in Lakeland (Free desserts for the birthday people, Kevin & me).  It was so great to see them.  After lunch, we made a quick stop at the Detroit Tigers Spring Training complex which was busy with activity getting ready for the upcoming season.  This was our first visit to Lakeland and even though it was brief, it got me thinking about how we could get back there for some Spring games (more on that later).

RV Window Repair
RV Repair:  Before leaving the Ft Myers area, we made an appointment to have the fogged windows in the living area of the RV repaired.  We had some minor fogging when we first bought the RV, but it has been getting worse.  This commonly happens over time when seals in the double pane windows age and deteriorate letting moisture in between the panes.  No leakage problems, mostly an aesthetics issue, but we decided to have five windows repaired.  Suncoast Designs in Hudson, FL (45 minutes north of Tampa) specializes in repair options as opposed to window replacement. (As long as your window glass isn't damaged, the windows can be taken apart; cleaned, polished, resealed and reinstalled.)  At their facility, free RV hookups are offered so you can stay there in your RV while the repair is being done.  We got a tour of the facility and the process they use and were impressed. They did a great job and we are VERY happy with the results. Suncoast warranties the work for as long as you own your RV.

Super Bowl party
Super Bowl party practice
Super Bowl in North Carolina:  With the RV repair scheduled to take 3-5 work days sandwiched around the first weekend in February, it got me thinking we might be able to consider a side trip.  With the Tampa airport about 40 minutes away, I checked into the possibility of flying to Raleigh to spend Super Bowl weekend with Cheryl, Darren & Ellie.  It all came together and we left the RV in safe keeping with Suncoast Designs, and drove back down to Tampa to catch a flight to Raleigh.  Luckily timing and everything worked well and we were fortunate to be part of the celebration since Darren and his family are lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fans.  We got to do a little babysitting and attend the big Super Bowl party (for a short time - then we took Ellie home).  We even wore our Eagles t-shirts - the band of course. Very happy for Darren that the Eagles won the Super Bowl; everyone concluded that Ellie is the lucky charm!

Continuing on a family note, several people have asked me how we get our "snail" mail.  Currently we have maintained a home address in Michigan using our son's Saline address.  Dan gets our mail and sorts through it.  Since most bills and banking are handled on line, he only occasionally has to send a packet of mail to our current location or scans something to e-mail to us.  It has worked very well and we appreciate Dan and Christie doing this for us.  So here is a current picture of the rest of our family that was sent to us in our last packet from Dan.   As you can see in the pictures, the granddaughters are growing up way too fast!

Rocky Bayou
RV Site at Rocky Bayou Park
Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park:  After returning to Tampa and picking up the RV, we finally headed to the panhandle; arriving at our first stop; Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park near Niceville, FL.  Located across the Choctawhatchee Bay from Destin, the park was very nice (electric and water hookups) and reasonably priced which was much appreciated after the high prices of southern FL.  A natural setting with large sites and several walking paths.  Unfortunately, we had a couple days of heavy rain while were were their, but won't hold that against a possible return visit.  We visited Destin via the 3.6 mile "Mid Bay Bridge", enjoying a trip to the beach and checking out the area we will be staying at later in the month.

Walking trails at Rocky Bayou Park
Destin Beach
The Park is named after Air Force Colonel Fred Gannon who helped preserve this site with beautiful "old-growth longleaf" pine trees, several more than 300 years old.  The pine needles grow 10-15 inches long.  In some ways reminded me of "up north" MI.

Beach at TH Stone State Park
T.H Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park:  Leaving Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou SP, we headed east about 125 miles to another Florida State Park, T.H. Stone Memorial St Joseph Peninsula.  This is quite a gem.  Located southeast of Panama City, the park takes up a large portion of the St. Joseph peninsula that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico.  With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and St Joseph Bay on the other this narrow peninsula has great water views on both sides.   If you like miles of pristine beaches (9.5 miles to be exact), no commercial development and the feeling of getting away from it all, this is a great location.  The website claims the park to be "rated as one of the best state parks in the U.S. and one of the best beaches in the nation".

Large sand dunes along the beach at TH Stone Park
No obstruction sunsets
The park offers a good number of camping sites, but a limited number for larger RVs, all have water & electric hook ups.  Great bike riding here too; miles of paved road within the park and a bike path outside the park that runs along the main peninsula road.

Dunes at sunset - T H Stone State Park
More from the website: "The park is noted as an excellent birding and wildlife observation area. During fall migration the peninsula is an important stopover point for a variety of bird species. The park has one of the most productive sea turtle and shore bird nest beaches in the panhandle".  They offer canoeing and kayaking on the bay side of the park as well as fishing and snorkeling.   The miles of natural beach with no high rises, no houses, no boat traffic, etc is refreshing.  The State has done a great job preserving this expansive beautiful area for public use; the TH Stone Memorial St Joseph Peninsula State Park is celebrating it's 50th year anniversary; love this park!

Apalachicola:  We took a short 30 mile drive further east along the coast to Apalachicola one morning.  An old, but well kept town on the Apalachicola Bay with small shops and a few restaurants. We saw an oyster processing facility with a huge mound of oyster shells and learned from visiting one of the parks, this one estuary provides people with shrimp, crabs, fish and approximately 90% of Florida's oyster harvest.

Back on St Joseph peninsula we stopped at a fresh seafood store and bought some fresh shrimp.  We peeled the jumbo size shrimp, put them on skewers and Jim cooked them on the grill - yum!

Panama City Beach pier
Panama City Beach
Panama City-Panama City Beach:  Another day trip took us back west into Panama City and Panama City Beach.  We needed to do some shopping and wanted to check out the area.  As you can see by the pictures, and as you may expect, it is the complete opposite of the area we have been staying.  A wall of high rise buildings line the beach and you have to look for public access points.  There is a nice public park with a pier, but there is a charge to walk out on the pier.  The beach is very nice and you can see why this area attracts a huge spring break crowd.  It was already congested with traffic due to major road construction on the main beach road.  Just a little too developed and "touristy" for me.

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park: Our last Florida State Park on this trip is Topsail Hill Preserve located a few miles east of Destin between Miramar Beach and Santa Rosa Beach.  Within the park is a "RV resort" that offers additional amenities; full hook ups, including sewer and cable TV.  There are also rental cabins for non campers.  They tout 3.2 miles of secluded white sand beach and a long list of recreation opportunities.  This should be another great biking park.

One "tech" note: we have found the cell service to be spotty along the northwest coast of FL and at the locations we have stayed in the panhandle.  Not too surprising since they are more remote.  With trying to do some remote tax and accounting work, we are considering a cell booster.  I know, I want the best of both worlds; still researching this option.

Joker Marchant Stadium
Detroit Tiger Training Complex-Lakeland
Future travels:  By the end of February, we are expecting to meet up with friends and family that will be in the area as well as my sister who lives nearby.  The other change in plans is when we leave the panhandle area around the second week in March, we are heading back south to Lakeland FL to Spring Training.  Very excited that we were able to get a reservation at a private park in Lakeland so we can see some Tiger Spring Training games.  I know it's a "rebuilding" year (or two) for the team, but as a lifelong Tiger fan this is something that I've always wanted to do.

From Lakeland we will head back to NC for a couple of weeks, then on to Washington DC for a couple of weeks (hoping to catch the Cherry blossoms in bloom with Beth and Kevin).  Planning on being in Michigan by 3rd week of April for our granddaughter Anna's Confirmation.  Still looking at trips to Maine and out west later this year; however, looks like we are learning to be a little more flexible and spontaneous with our plans and it feels good!
